Practical theology and social justice (PhD edit)

Thanks, Mom, for photos sent by email.

Practical theology and social justice (PhD edit)

Practical theology is sociopolitically committed.[1] Persons from ‘below’ are a focus of practical theology, these being people who experience institutionalized injustice and oppression.[2] The Church should not simply attempt to raise itself to heaven in a sense,[3] but needs to focus on working within the world.[4] Robert McAfee Brown (1984) comments that in the Bible, in places such as Exodus, God takes a position against those who promote oppression and injustice.[5] God at times does take sides in human struggles,[6] and God does side with the oppressed.[7] Christians are sometimes in the delicate and tricky position of staying true to Biblical standards and yet standing with those who are oppressed and within the world system,[8] even if they are not believers and live outside of Christian morality. Those in power who call themselves Christians need to be respectfully challenged if they are perceived with a significant deal of evidence, to be involved in abusive practice.[10] Western Christians need to examine the side they are on in many of the world’s social struggles, particularly in regard to the third world.[11]

In my mind there is a danger that Christianity, whether conservative or liberal, becomes overly influenced by cultures where it exists.

Any historical corruption of the Christian Church is, in the end, a poor witness of Christ and the gospel and weakens the credibility of Christian ministry in the minds of many critics.

Thoughts on FIFA and no instant replay

TSN: FIFA no replay

'FIFA refused to comment Monday on mistakes made by World Cup match officials that contributed to the elimination of England and Mexico. The governing body of world soccer did not send any officials with responsibility for referees to its daily briefing despite widespread furor over Sunday's errors.'

'"We obviously will not open any debate," Maingot said. "This is obviously not the place for this."'

Figures. It is amazing that the people at the head of perhaps the most powerful organization in the world concerning the most popular sport, are not overly concerned with as much as possible guaranteeing the most accurate results.

It is as if they are putting tradition before truth.

Hmm, does that not take place in some religion as well? Interesting.

'FIFA president Sepp Blatter, who attended both games Sunday, strongly opposes introducing any video technology to help referees.

"Let it be as it is and let's leave football with errors," Blatter said after video experiments were halted at a March 2008 meeting of the rules panel, the International Football Association Board.''

I reason newer leadership is needed.

Really, not even close.

I do not drive a semi.

  1. I have to admit to not having an appreciation for the sport, only because it's not particularly popular here professionally, and I kept forgetting it was on. I would be reminded every time my nephew would call to tell me how the US team did. And the sound of that South Afrcan horn-- I wouldn't have been able to tolerate it for 2 minutes. I do love American football and basketball though.

  2. Thank you, Daij.

The NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, and PGA are all more popular with the public in America than European football.

Most of the top American athletes will not primarily play soccer.

Football is the most popular sport for the public in Europe and South America.

Football is the most popular sport for athletes in Europe and South America.

Europe and South America, although containing many different nations, still each have larger populations than the USA.

Europe and South America both have individual nations with large populations.

Therefore, I reason the United States of America will likely never win the FIFA World Cup.

As for Canada, the situation in regard to soccer is even worse.

  4. Welcome. I hope as well that the theological and philosophical content is helpful. Delightful and not frightful.

Imagine if I ordered party equipment from Michigan and I live in BC.

Perhaps I should order virtual party equipment with virtual money.

Thanks. Please have a splendid day.

  5. Sorry for being here so late. Am in the middle of getting ready to move house (pretty exciting and stressful) and blogging suffers a bit.

I saw that game England versus Germany. AND Holland won today!!!

  6. I do not follow or care about soccer, but has anyone won yet?

Rick, yes, I am winning, in the sense of doing well.

  8. Any historical corruption of the Christian Church is, in the end, a poor witness of Christ and the gospel and weakens the credibility of Christian ministry in the minds of many critics.

And yet, I think it is inevitable, historically-speaking, regarding entire nations, at least. That is because we are sinners, and are imperfect. For example, America started out as a Christian nation, based on biblical principles and beliefs, but, in terms of hundreds of years, it has fallen into decline rather quickly. Many nations, including England, Egypt, North Africa, and others, used to have somewhat large percentages of Christians at one time (some were thanks to the Apostles bringing Christianity there, where it reigned strong for hundreds of years...for example, North Africa was Christian for 600 years), but now have small percentages (though there are revivals occurring in various places, praise God, such as Cuba, Israel, etc.). Of course, Egypt and North Africa were not victims of moral decline (to my knowledge), but rather of being slaughtered/wiped out/eradicated/taken over by military force. England, on the other hand, has embraced secularism and humanism, and the U.S. is following in its path. There is also tons of false doctrine within the Church today, and that is a powerful tool of the devil which has caused many to be confused about doctrine and to believe in many false ideas. In addition, it has negatively affected the Church's witness to the world...as has the 'Prosperity Gospel,' or the 'Health and Wealth Gospel'...also, 'Name it and claim it,' or 'Blab it and Grab it.'

  9. The gospel is still in existence in the West.

There is not a need for restoration.

There is a need for reformation.

    Further:

By this I mean a more Biblical, theological, repentant and loving Church.

    Cheers.

    Agreed.

I think it would be scary for me to be trapped in there.

    Granted there are monitored cameras.

Very interesting. But if you ever lose your parking token, you will never see your car again, as it will remain forever underground. And, when you have to answer those questions that it asks you, what if you get one wrong? ; )

I was going to suggest you get yourself a pet crocodile in order to protect yourself from that cougar, but, after Chucky's video of the tiger killing the croc, I guess that wouldn't do much good. That video makes me think of a big housecat killing a big lizard.

Well, since I had Monday off from work, I replaced my mailbox that was vandalized. That's the hardest I have worked in a while. Thankfully, the old wooden post that was sunk into the ground was not hard to pull up (I was afraid it might be cemented in, but it wasn't).

One could feel claustrophobic trapped in a car in one of those parking spots.

'I was going to suggest you get yourself a pet crocodile in order to protect yourself from that cougar...'

Love is the answer...make it my pet.

'Well, since I had Monday off from work, I replaced my mailbox that was vandalized.'

Good Jeff, but running from the local cougar (panther in your area) would be even better exercise, especially in this heat.

    Cheers.

  25. Whats up with the English soccer match, come on ref! look at the replay, a lot is on the line here,
This could have changed the game totally by allowing this goal for England!

  26. Hello, Walter.

    Thank you.

    FIFA to look at replays

    Excerpt:

'Contested ref calls are a part of the game, but this past Sunday, soccer fans watching the World Cup were treated to two major displays of referees’ incompetence: First, when England played Germany, England was down 2-1 when they got the ball into the goal, as seen in the above picture — but because the ball bounced out before the referee ’saw’ it, they didn’t get the goal. Arguably, had they finished the first half tied 2-2, they might have played the second half differently and not lost 1-4. That afternoon, when Argentina played Mexico, Carlos Tevez scored Argentina’s first goal when he was wildly offsides (see below), but the ref didn’t overturn it. Argentina went on to win 3-1.
Now, FIFA president and arch-traditionalist Sepp Blatter has announced his plans to reconsider the tech solution that had long been out of the question for him: Video replays...'

'According to the Wall Street Journal, FIFA has ‘reopened the file’ on replay tech following this past weekend’s disputed calls, and that Blatter personally apologized to both the British and Mexican teams after play.'
