Paradise in the New Testament (Non-Exhaustive)

November 20, 2010

This post was completed in writing on November 20th, but the post date is December 1. Why? Well, I only want to generally publish four articles per month, two per blog. My last Biblical Studies post on this blog did better than I expected as far as public response. In December things may slow down due to Christmas time and so I very well may want to have my some of my 'December' public blog interaction done in November. With my new scanner recently purchased, I actually have a scanner once again, my old scanner was broken two years ago. I can now scan the New Testament Greek rather than having to look it all up online. This makes writing Biblical Studies posts more reasonable in my opinion. Also the work is now much less of a hassle than searching the web for a Greek root word with the proper ending and then copying and pasting, but still it is a hassle with scanning the books again and again with the machine and looking up technical words. A different kind of hassle than theological and philosophical posts but still a hassle. But hassle is my middle name apparently, well actually it is Norman, but at least now it starts with Dr.;)

Paradise from the New Testament Greek

Strong page 1035.

Strong page 72. The scan is not perfect but the best of several attempts! I do not have a personal assistant, nor is my scanner huge.

Marshall page 257. Paradise from Luke 43.

Marshall page 545. Paradise from 2 Corinthians. I tried to include more text but the way the book fit on the scanner it was distorted. I will leave distortion of the Scripture intentionally to the cults and those with major agendas.;)

Marshall page 727. Paradise from Revelation 2: 7.

Commentary

Bauer on page 614 describes Paradise from Luke 23, 2 Corinthians 12 and Revelation 2 as a place above the earth. Now from my philosophical/theological perspective I do not take this plain literally, as in some place in the clouds, or above the clouds, or even beyond the solar system or beyond the physical Universe, as in a place that can be physically found via space/travel.

The Bible teaches that Paradise is a place where spirits in Christ go after death, and Old Testament/Hebrew Bible saints went to spiritually after death.

The Bible teaches this using figurative literal language.

Therefore, I would conclude Paradise is a place of the non-physical spiritual realm.

Now, in discussion at church and with my theological/philosophical friends over the years I have speculated that because human beings are used to and made for physicality, Paradise may consist of, and I state may consist of, a simulated physicality that seems like earth to the persons that are there.

On the other hand there is the school of thought that when one dies in Christ he or she may almost immediately awaken in the resurrected body making the Paradise references strongly metaphorical as opposed to figurative literal. This will not be immediate, but will seem to be.

This is certainly orthodox and possible, but I question whether Jesus meant this by the use of 'today' to the criminal on the cross. Strong notes that it has to do with now and present. Strong (1890)(1986: 87).

There is also the issue of Paul's 2 Corinthians reference and his willingness to consider departing the body to be with the Lord in Philippians 1.

  2. Hello Russ,
You've found another topic that I often think about. It seems to me that because it is our soul/spirit that is in paradise, not our physical bodies, paradise will be a place of the spirit, physical only in a way that the Creator could understand!

  3. Hmmm. People from Paradise checking into you blog?

I was wondering what would happen if the techniques of Hell deconstruction were used against Paradise. For example, we know that the thief on the cross went to Paradise the same day, but this was clearly before the final judgment. Thus, isn't Paradise and intermediate state - a bit like Sheol and analogous to purgatory - and not a final everlasting state? Perhaps we only get to enjoy it until our goodness points we earned up here on Earth expire? ;-)

  4. Hello! The Paradise is really shown by all corners of the World.
The lesson of the Torah tells us, when the expulsion of Adam from paradise, was precisely because we do not recognize the greatness of all that the L-rd gives us. We are greedy and ignorant, this is the cause why not enjoy the paradises that are out there. We only need want to live well in Earth.

Thanks your comment in Yeladim Blog

    Peace

As noted, Paradise can be taken figurative literally and not metaphorically (One is simply in some type of soul sleep or with the Lord but not in an actual place, or in an situation that seems like such), so I would reason eventually the spirits of Paradise would eventually be resurrected as in 1 Corinthians 15, and participate in the new earth and new heaven, the culminated Kingdom of God. This would be a return in a sense to the Garden of Eden.

    Cheers, Jennifer.

  7. Thanks, Looney.

Yes, I reason Revelation 20 describes the lake of fire (hell 2) that Hades (hell 1) is thrown into verse 14. Paradise (heaven 1) leads into the earthly Kingdom of God (heaven 2) of Revelation Chapters 21 and 22, the new earth, and new heaven, which is again somewhat of a reprise of the Garden of Eden.

I am aware that much symbolic and non-plain literal language is used in Revelation.:)

  8. 'Hello! The Paradise is really shown by all corners of the World.'

    Thanks, Isha

I reason Paradise is a temporary spiritual holding place and indeed there will be a new earth and heaven (Revelation 21-22).

'The lesson of the Torah tells us, when the expulsion of Adam from paradise, was precisely because we do not recognize the greatness of all that the L-rd gives us. We are greedy and ignorant, this is the cause why not enjoy the paradises that are out there. We only need want to live well in Earth.'

    Good point.

The human condition needs a change in nature to once again live on the earth with the creator as needed. (John 3, I Corinthians 15).

  10. "when one dies in Christ he or she may almost immediately awaken in the resurrected body making the Paradise references strongly metaphorical as opposed to figurative literal. This will not be immediate, but will seem to be..." I always wonder about this.

I'm going to email my best friend the link to your blog. He's in seminary school in Berkeley, and I can imagine you being someone he could bounce questions off.

  11. Thanks, Daij.

I have been to Berkeley once back in 1997. It was part of an interesting trip I took with Pope Chucklins I. We drove from Maple Ridge to the San Francisco Bay area/Mountain View to see Rush because we could not see the Vancouver show as we would be in the UK with my initial PhD University tour.

While in Berkeley some, I assume, drunk or stoned male punk was waving around a bat (wood or metal) in the middle of the town. I stayed clear. Later, once the concert was over, we went back to Seattle via Portland and flew to London and visited places such as Manchester, Durham, Bristol, York, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Salisbury, Brussels and Luxembourg City.

I never applied to any North American institutions for a Doctorate. I wanted to do a research Doctorate only, but ended up having to do the MPhil as well.

  12. I believe that when a Christian dies, apparently, their soul/spirit (I still have a hard time distinguishing between the two) goes to Heaven (i.e., Paul said 'to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord'), but at the Rapture, apparently, those in Heaven will have their soul/spirit reunited with their body, though their body will be a resurrected (supernatural) body, as Jesus' body was after His resurrection.

The Bible also talks about Abraham's bosom as, apparently, Paradise. But Jesus said, "I go to prepare a place for you," so, before Jesus' ascension, Heaven or Paradise was apparently not the same as it will be, because Jesus apparently was/is creating something new (i.e., mansions in glory, etc.).

    ReplyDelete
  13. Thanks, Jeff.

Abraham's bosom as Paradise, yes that seems reasonable. Some scholars reason that the story in Luke 16 in parable, and I reason that it is likely parable, using characters and describing an actual spiritual place, in a sense, again with figurative literal language.

This may be why the rich man asks to have his tongue cooled by water, as if that would help much. In fact it seems likely in my mind that this is not literal hellfire. But Hades is a place of spiritual punishment.

Mansions and places where people dwell in Christ are perhaps the use of figurative literal language for the culminated Kingdom, as he is the King and therefore prepares his people as he works in their lives.

  14. Shalom Aleichem my friend!

    I appreciate the response.
I think it very clear: The L-rd has already given us the paradise, we must follow his commandments and appreciate what is given to us every day. I don't think that there may still be a better place. We need making a better world, the lessons have been taught, we must put into practice.

    I wish you Peace.

  15. FYI, I saw and published your comment at Pizza Hut via my Blackberry...;)

I am not brave enough to try and type a long response with a cell phone.

So, the Pizza is reheating in the oven and so I shall answer.

    Thank you, Adelle.

    'Shalom Aleichem my friend!'

It is good to have a Jewish, Brazilian friend, and blessings to your family. As stated your baby is cute, and I am good with the kiddies.

    'I appreciate the response.

My Christian theology is that via Christ and his atoning work, God/the Lord, shall restore the present planet and Universe, so the terms new earth and new heaven are figurative literal and not plain literal.

I speculate reading those such as Mounce that the continents will likely remain the same etc.

    'I wish you Peace.

And to you and family as well.

I shall try, and I greatly respect you for participating in this blog and I will respect your views and I am sure we can often agree and sometimes disagree agreeably.

Hey, I disagree with everyone...even myself and then I have to delete stuff at 4 am.

  16. Thanks Doctor for your article on paradise, very interesting, so to sum things up you believe that instantly after death a believer goes to paradise which is located in a spiritual realm that coexists with the reality we as humans currently live in and experience??

  20. Thank you, Ms. Butterfly, I have wondered about that very nice island photo myself, my guess is it is somewhere like Greece or the Philippines but I do not know. Seems to me I downloaded the image off of StumbleUpon and there was no description of the place with it.

I have stated this before, I have never been to a part of the world with sky blue water like that. That photo is one of my favourite desktop photos.
